When I use liberal in the section about liberalism I generally am describing the political center of those who are market-oriented and also beleive in pluralistic and democratic institutions. To me most Democrats and Republicans are liberal(although increasingly more and more Republicans are turning more illiberal). I agree the decay of strong institutions in the US began lonng before Trump(in reality there are always forces working to dismantle them), but Trump not only exposed but magnified problems. Essentially, leaders like Trump and Orban aren't anomalies is what I meant to say, the seeds for this kind of thing were rooted in liberal arrogance(as I discuss). So when I write liberal here I don't mean American leftwing liberals. So, for instance, the German CDU, Theresa May, Ursula von der Leyen, Emmanuel Macron, Joe Biden, and Mitt Romney would all be considered liberal. Thanks for your response!
